Gemma Farrell Quintet at the RechabiteLive Music / Jazz

Gemma Farrell is a jazz saxophonist, composer and educator.

She is a PhD candidate and lectures in jazz studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and leads the Young Women in Jazz program for the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Gemma has a Master of Music degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Queensland Conservatorium. In 2018 and 2019 the Gemma Farrell Quintet was nominated for Best Jazz Act and she was nominated for Best Woodwind or Brass Instrumentalist at the WAM awards. In 2018 her composition "Tony Umbridge" was nominated for WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category and in 2016 her composition "Requiem" was also nominated in that category. Gemma is the founder and musical director of the Artemis Orchestra, a predominantly female big band which performs the original music of Australian women, non-binary and transgender people. They have performed at the Perth International Jazz Festival from 2018-2020.

The Gemma Farrell Quintet released their debut album Organised Chaos in June 2018, and it was RTRFM's local feature album that week. The Quintet completed an Australian tour in November 2019, performing at the Sydney International Womens Jazz Festival, Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane and the Jazz Lab in Melbourne. The quintet have also performed at In The Pines 2019, the 2018 WAM Awards and the Perth International Jazz Festivals in 2015, 2018 and 2019. They will perform at RTRFM's Neon Picnic in 2021.

In July 2018, Gemma toured Australia with her project MFG, which features Nico Maas and Thomas Goralski from Germany. They recorded their third album, "Small Town Tennis Hero," during this tour.MFG also toured Europe in 2016 and Australia in 2014 and have released two albums.

In August 2018, Gemma travelled to Stockton California on behalf of WAYJO, to be a tutor at the Brubeck Institute’s Summer Jazz Colony at the University of the Pacific.

Gemma also performs in J.B.'s J.B.'sThe Perth Cabaret Collective,the 950 express and many other ensembles. Recently the Artemis Orchestra received a grant to record their debut album in January 2021. This will be released in June 2021.
